With support from Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, students from the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences have been able to undertake eye examinations in Welsh for the first time.  This exciting development is part of the School's strategy to increase access to eyecare for all, as well as being a useful addition to the teaching of optometry.  Two students, Eleri Chapman and Aled Williams, were supervised during the eye examination by Norma Davies, a community optometrist working in Llanelli.  We look forward to continuing this new service for all Welsh speaking staff and students in the University, as well as in the broader community.
Elliw Iwan said "I don't think anyone has been as exited about an eye test before, but I've seen this develop from being an idea discussed at the School into reality in very short period of time.  Thanks to the School's commitment to develop Welsh medium provision and enthusiastic students, my first ever eye test was a pleasant experience, and I wish the students all the best in their future careers.  Giving the students a chance to use their Welsh language skills in a professional context is a model other Healthcare Schools at Cardiff will be very interested to emulate."

Gyda nawdd gan y Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, cafodd myfyrwyr yn Ysgol Optometreg a Gwyddorau'r Golwg y cyfle i gynnal profion llygaid yn y Gymraeg am y tro cyntaf.
Mae'r datblygiad cyffrous yma yn rhan o strategaeth yr Ysgol i ehangu darpariaeth gofal llygaid i bawb, yn ogystal â bod yn ychwanegiad defnyddiol iawn i addysg optometreg.  Cafodd dau fyfyriwr, Eleri Chapman ac Aled Williams, eu goruchwylio gan Norma Davies, optometrydd cymunedol sydd yn gweithio yn Llanelli.  Edrychwn ymlaen at barhau i ddarparu'r gwasanaeth yma i staff a myfyrwyr y Brifysgol, ac i'r gymuned ehangach.
Dywedodd Elliw Iwan, "ni wn am neb a fu mor gyffrous am brawf llygaid o'r blaen, ond mae gweld y syniad yma yn troi'n realiti yn fy ngwneud i'n falch iawn o ymrwymiad yr Ysgol i ddatblygu darpariaeth cyfrwng Cymraeg, ac o frwdfrydedd y myfyrwyr at eu sgiliau ieithyddol. Dymunaf bob llwyddiant i'r myfyrwyr yn eu gyrfaoedd.  Mae'r enghraifft hon o roi cyfle i fyfyrwyr ddefnyddio'u Cymraeg yn y cyd-destun proffesiynol yn fodel y gall pob ysgol maes iechyd yn y Brifysgol ei fabwysiadu."
