Research Interests
My research centres around Special Needs Optometry. Visual defects are much more common amongst children and adults with disabilities than amongst the general population. My colleagues and I are active in developing tests which enable us to assess vision in people unable to read letter charts or to communicate readily. I have already designed a test, The Cardiff Acuity Test, Cardiff Contrast Test and Cardiff Near Test, for this purpose. My colleagues and I continue our long-term study of visual and cognitive development in infants and young children with Down's Syndrome, who are at particular risk of eye defects. My other interests are the aetiology of refractive and accommodative defects, and the impact of visual impairment on a child's development and education.
