At the recent meeting of Council, the University's governing body, members considered the proposals for the Centre for Lifelong Learning (18 May 2009). Council was presented with the facts about the situation facing the Centre for Lifelong Learning, and options for securing the Centre's long term future. Council also received a deputation from staff and trade unions.
Council will not make any final decisions on this matter until the end of the 90-day consultation period, which falls in July. Recognising the Centre faces some difficult choices, it was agreed by Council that:
The University is pursuing every avenue to avoid redundancies and minimise the impact on students, while safeguarding the long-term future of the Centre. It is also, while adhering to the requirements of legislation, offering appropriate support including opportunities for redeployment to those individuals affected by these proposals.
