Public lecture marks UN International Day of Older People

One of Wales’ role models on active and healthy ageing, the Right Honourable Rhodri Morgan AM will be giving a special public lecture at Cardiff University on 30 September 2010.

Part of the University’s celebrations of the United Nations International Day of Older People, the public lecture, Promoting Active and Healthy Ageing, is aimed at anyone who has contact with older people, service providers, family carers, older people, and their family and friends.

This high profile event follows a one-day academic conference hosted by the University’s School of Medicine which will bring together social care practitioners, policy makers and world-leading academics to discuss how to promote active and healthy ageing.

Also marking the beginning of the University’s Science in Health Lecture Series, Mr Morgan’s lecture will be preceded be an exclusive reading of a poem specially written to celebrate the International Day of the Older Person by the National Poet of Wales, Gillian Clarke.

Rhodri Morgan received the University’s first Honorary Degree in 2010 and was appointed an Honorary Distinguished Professor. His lecture will be taking place at the University’s Julian Hodge Building. Starting at 7.30pm, with refreshments from 7pm, places are limited and booking is essential.

The International Day of the Older Person is a United Nations initiative that provides an opportunity for local communities to come together to acknowledge and celebrate the contribution older people make to society.
