An Indian student is embarking on a three year degree programme after winning a scholarship to study at Cardiff University as part of a tough televised contest.
Ayushman Jamwal, an 18 year old from New Delhi, has enrolled at the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies after successfully beating off thousands of other Indian applicants on the New Delhi Television programme ‘Scholar Hunt: Destination UK’.
Having already met the University’s academic requirements, Ayushman scooped the top prize after completing a series of demanding exams and tough interviews set out by academic experts from the School, including a televised interview, a question-and-answer session and a practical challenge.
Ayushman said: "I’ve never won anything on this scale before. It’s the chance of a lifetime and I’m really excited to be studying at Cardiff University. Since winning the programme I’ve gained huge recognition in India. I’ve already enrolled on the course and I’m enjoying living in Cardiff. It’s a beautiful city and I’m looking forward to the next three years here."
Dr John Jewell, Deputy Chair of the Undergraduate Board of Studies at the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies, co-devised the tasks the would-be students completed for the programme and interviewed the finalists in the closing stages of the competition. Dr Jewell said: "Ayushman Jamwal is a very capable young man, a worthy winner of the competition and someone whom we are sure will be a credit to the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural studies.
"Intellectually, the competition was very taxing for the students involved. We needed to be sure that whilst the profile of the University was raised in India, the integrity of our degree was not compromised. Thus, for example, all of the finalists possessed or exceeded the academic achievements we would have required of any overseas applicant".
Sandra Elliott, director of Cardiff University’s International Development Division, said: "Scholar Hunt makes for compelling viewing. We are delighted to welcome a very able student to the School of Journalism Media and Cultural Studies and to benefit from the increased profile that the show has given to Cardiff University in India."
Cardiff University already has strong links in India. The School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies has a high reputation in the subcontinent, with its MA in International Journalism proving very popular with Indian journalism students. Large numbers of Indian students are enrolled on business, law and engineering courses and there is an active Indian Student Society. The School also has a close relationship with the Asian College of Journalism, Chennai, one of India's leading media schools. The University has collaborative programmes with many other leading Indian universities including IIM Calcutta and the Indian Institute of Science Bangalore.
Cardiff’s partners in the project are the Universities of Sheffield, Leeds, Middlesex and Warwick.
1. Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies
The School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies has research and teaching interests in journalism and other contemporary media including, international media, media technologies, media and development, film, popular music, radio, television, photojournalism, magazine journalism and public and media relations. The School houses the Centre for Journalism Studies, founded by Sir Tom Hopkinson in 1970, and the Tom Hopkinson Centre for Media Research, founded in 1996. The Centre for Journalism Studies offers the highly acclaimed Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism Studies, which prepares new graduates for a career in journalism or public and media relations. Students can chose to specialise in broadcast, magazines, newspaper, photojournalism or public and media relations. The course is recognised by industry’s accrediting and standard setting bodies, the National Council for the Training of Journalists, the Periodicals Training Council, the National Council for the Training of Broadcast Journalists and the Institute of Public Relations. Media research is supported by the Tom Hopkinson Research Centre. Areas of research expertise include: visual culture, popular journalism and democracy; media and national/regional identities; media histories; media and gender and ethnic representations; media and children; and international journalism.
