Get ‘shaken not stirred’ at Cardiff Centre for Lifelong Learning

It’s more than 50 years since the world’s most famous secret agent first appeared and yet he remains as popular as ever.

Now Cardiff University’s Centre for Lifelong Learning is offering a new course which gives students a chance to explore the reasons for 007’s continuing appeal.

The course ‘James Bond in Context’ is included in the Centre’s new prospectus, Choices, listing over 300 courses starting in the New Year.

James Bond is one of the most enduringly popular cultural figures in post-war Britain. Since his first appearance in 1952 in Ian Fleming's novel Casino Royale the character has become a phenomenon.

The Bond novels by Ian Fleming have been translated into many languages and have sold in their millions. Even Fleming's death in 1964 did not prevent new Bond novels appearing. They continued to be written by many other authors including Kingsley Amis and more recently Charlie Higson (of the Fast Show) has been writing his Young Bond series.

The twenty-one James Bond films have taken over $4 billion at the box office making it the second highest grossing film series ever.

‘James Bond in Context’ (from Monday 21 January 2008) aims to explore every aspect of the Bond phenomenon - the films, the stars, the books, the music and other forms of popular culture.
