The UK Deputy Prime Minister and Liberal Democrat Leader has presented his views on the future of Welsh devolution during a lecture in Cardiff this week.
The Rt Hon Nick Clegg MP delivered the year’s Wales Governance Centre’s Annual Lecture, titled: Power and Responsibility: Where next for devolution?
The Wales Governance Centre’s Annual Lecture was established in 2000 and has become a significant date in the Cardiff University diary. Past lectures have been delivered by leading devolution experts as well as senior Welsh political figures including the Paul Murphy MP, former First Minister, Rhodri Morgan, former Welsh Conservative leader Nick Bourne, and the National Assembly’s former Presiding Officer, Lord Dafydd Elis Thomas AM.
Wales Governance Centre Director, Professor Richard Wyn Jones, said: "With so much attention centred on developments in Scotland, this is the first time in many, many years that a senior UK political figure has given sustained attention to Wales, and discussed their vision of the future of Wales and of the nation’s place in the Union. We were delighted that Mr Clegg was able to join us – his views will make a significant contribution to public debate over the future of Welsh governance."
Wales Governance Centre undertakes research into all aspects of the law, politics, government and political economy of Wales, as well the wider UK and European contexts of territorial governance. A key objective of the WGC is to facilitate and encourage informed public debate of key developments in Welsh governance. It brings together academics from the University’s School of Language, Translation and Politics (EUROP) and Cardiff Law School.
The lecture: Power and Responsibility: Where next for Devolution?, took place on Thursday, June 14th at the Pierhead building in Cardiff Bay.
