University’s Sustainable Development Strategic Framework

11 November 2010

Cardiff University Sustainability Week

The University has made available a strategic roadmap which will support its aim of becoming a more sustainable institution across its learning, teaching and operations.

Published during the University’s Sustainability Week (8-12 November 2010), the Cardiff University Sustainable Development Strategic Framework is a University-wide policy formally setting out the sustainable development principles which will continue to inform decision making, procurement and other processes.

The Framework covers three interlinked areas - society, environment and the economy - which will be under-pinned by the University’s own research and education.

It will be the overarching policy that brings together, and guides the further development of other policy areas at the University including purchasing, energy, waste and water, and travel. It will also help to guide how the University uses its academic expertise to advance, promote and educate on sustainable development issues through its research and degree programmes for the longer term benefit of future generations.

Professor Hywel Thomas, Pro Vice-Chancellor Engagement and International, and Chair of the University’s Sustainability Group, said: "At the University, we believe that, rather than doing the minimum in order to fulfil our obligations, sustainable development should be integral to the values of the University, and be embedded in our operations.

"This framework enables us to formally align our strategies and operations with the key sustainable development principles of long-term social justice and environmental protection. It will also allow us to maximise our contribution to an improving quality of life for our staff and students and communities in Cardiff, Wales and internationally."

Published alongside the Strategic Framework is Cardiff University’s Sustainable Development Implementation Plan. This will ensure that the Strategic Framework is put into action and supports the co-ordination of specific actions to be undertaken in 2010/11.

The University’s Sustainability Group will oversee the implementation and co-ordination of the Sustainable Development Strategic Framework.

In May 2010, Cardiff was the first Welsh university to make a landmark commitment to future proofing lives and communities across Wales, by signing the Welsh Assembly Government’s Sustainable Development Charter. Developing and publishing the University’s Sustainable Development Strategic Framework is one of the commitments made by the University on signing the Charter earlier this year.
