A Cardiff delegation played a prominent role in the recent 5th Annual Confucius Institute Conference, held in Beijing
Professor Hywel Thomas, Pro-Vice Chancellor International and Engagement, spoke at this major event for Confucius Institutes from around the world, presenting to a session on educational partnerships both within and outside the University
Along with Cardiff Confucius Institute co-directors Dr Richard Evans and Professor Fu Siyi, Professor Thomas met Professor Zhu Chongshi, President of Xiamen University, the University’s partner in the Cardiff Confucius Institute. At the Conference Dinner Professor Thomas and Professor Fu also met Madame Xu Lin, the Director-General of HANBAN, the Headquarters of Confucius Institutes worldwide.
Dr Evans also led a session on collaboration between Institute Directors and presented its findings to the final plenary session of the Conference.
Dr Evans and Professor Fu had attended the pre-Conference workshop for all Confucius Institutes associated with Xiamen University. They reported on the progress at Cardiff over the last year and gave news of the European network of Xiamen’s Confucius Institutes. Cardiff has established and is leading the network which will meet for the first time in Malta in February 2011.
After the Conference Dr Evans and Professor Fu visited the University of Chongqing, where the University already has strong links, especially in Architecture and Low Carbon Research. They met colleagues from the College of International Education, including the Deputy Dean, Professor Jiang Yan, and Professor Li Jing, who is also Director of the Confucius Institute at Pisa in Italy.
