The UK’s first designated course offering students the chance to train as professional translators in any language has been launched at the University.
The University’s new MA in Translation Studies, available in the School of European Studies, offers students the chance to gain profession translation skills applicable to any source and to any target language.
The course is aimed at students seeking a career as a translator or for those interested in the study of translation as a basis from which to pursue a PhD in such disciplines as translation studies, comparative literature, cultural studies or history.
Training also prepares students for careers in other language-related professions, including journalism, public relations or language teaching.
Professor Alexis Nuselovici, School of European Studies, who led the development of the new course said: "The University’s new MA in Translation Studies is the first in the UK to offer students the chance to gain professional translation skills in any language.
"What’s unique about this new course is the fact that it offers complete freedom to choose to translate from any language into any language."
The new one-year MA course, available from September 2009, comes as the European Union’s Directorate-General for Translation warned of a potential gap in the number of professional translators.
Professor Nuselovici added: "The European Union’s Directorate-General for Translation has already warned that as a result of impending retirements and further expansion of the European Union, there will be a growing need for professional translators to service the need.
"The increasing movement of people, especially within the European Union, has seen demand for professional translation services increase. We hope that the freedom that the course offers students to gain professional translation skills in and from any language will help meet this gap."
