Listen to Professor Thomas discussing the Cardiff University Innovation System
As a research-intensive university committed to be consistently among the top 100 universities in the world our commitment to research, innovation and enterprise is crucial.
This document sets a clear path for the next five years to ensure our research has global impact by tackling the grand challenges of our time.
To do so needs a set of actions – from being highly selective in where we invest; where we choose to collaborate at a Wales, UK and international level; to investing in major infrastructure and our exciting plans for an "Innovation System"; and building on our Research Institutes.
Essential to achieving our aims is the investment in our staff and our expectations on them to deliver; to help support our aim of increasing our postgraduate research students and increasing research income.
Crucial to delivery in the The Way Forward 2012-2017 will be monitoring our performance with a number of robust performance indicators.
From growing research income by 10 percent to be top 10 in REF 2014 this document sets out how we will deliver against our ambitions, to ensure we are best positioned to contribute to the skills, jobs and economic growth agenda.
What I will particularly value is staff engagement with shaping our plans. The Cardiff University Innovation System will comprise the infrastructure and estate required to partner applied research of world-leading excellence that drives innovation with industry, government and other agencies. We will be organising workshops in the new academic year to engage staff and industry to shape this work further.
