One of UK’s leading experts on measures to prevent torture will deliver a public lecture next week (Thursday 7th April) to consider new measures to address ill-treatment.
Malcolm Evans is Professor of Public International Law at Bristol University and an expert in international human rights, specifically in the area of torture prevention.
Professor Evans has particular expertise on the practice of the European Committee on Prevention of Torture (CPT) and is the Chair of the United Nations Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT) - a unique United Nations body composed of ten individual experts, under the United Nations Convention Against Torture.
The Committee makes regular visits to the places of deprivation of liberty which are in the jurisdiction and control of the party states.
Professor Evans’ lecture will focus on the background to the work of the SPT and how it seeks to address torture and ill-treatment across the world.
Professor Evans is also a member of the OSCE Advisory Panel on Freedom of Religion and Belief; the ILA Human Rights Law and Practice Committee; and the Board of Management of the Association for the Prevention of Torture.
The lecture has been organised by School of European Studies’ International Affairs Research Group (IARG) - an interdisciplinary forum for everyone interested in global and international issues and an intellectual meeting place for scholars, practitioners and community groups and offers the opportunity to transcend disciplinary boundaries.
The lecture takes place on Thursday 7th April at the Temple of Peace, Cathays Park.
Places are limited. Anyone who is interested in attending the event or would like any further information can contact: Jenny Hulin, Postgraduate Research Officer by e-mailing: Euros-pgr@Cardiff.ac.uk or telephone: 029 2087 4885.
