Visually impaired young people have joined optometry students from the University to climb one of Wales' most iconic mountains.

10 students from the University's School of Optometry and Vision Sciences joined forces with six members of UCAN Productions joined forces - an organisation that creates opportunities for visually impaired youngsters - to climb Pen-Y-Fan, the highest peak in the Brecon Beacons.

The four mile route took the group to 2,907ft above sea level. As well as raising awareness of visual impariment, the team will also be raising money to help staff and students from the School provide free eye tests and spectacles for the people of Moldova as part of the trip to the area in July.

Dr Tom Margain, of the School who is involved in the walk said: "It has been estimated that worldwide there are 153 million people who are classed as visually impaired simply due to not owning spectacles."

"The trip is part of an established project within the School, which has been running for 11 years and has already reached out to over 12,500 people who were in desperate need of specatcles. Any spectacles required are given free of charge so this year £3300 needs to be raised to cover these costs, with the intention of sight testing over 1500 impoverished people in areas where sight tests would normally be completely unavailable."

UCAN Productions is a not-for-profit organisation that works in partnership with RNIB Cymru. It gives children with visual impairments in Wales access to the arts to help boost their confidence and self-esteem and to challenge the perceptions of sighted people.

Sponsorship money can be donated via cheque written for "Returning Vision Moldova 2012" and posted to the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences, Cardiff University, CF24 4LU care of Helen Peregrine. Alternatively Helen can be contacted on for further details.
