01 March 2011
The University and the Students’ Union are celebrating Fairtrade Fortnight (28 Feb – 13 Mar 2011) with a range of special promotions and offers.
The theme for this year’s event is ‘Show off your label’. One of the ways in which the Fairtrade Foundation is asking people to show off about Fairtrade is to get creative and decorate piece of cotton bunting to display in prominent places. At the end of the fortnight, the Foundation plans to stitch all the bunting together in an attempt to break the world record for the longest continual piece of bunting.
The Students’ Union will be helping to decorate bunting for this record attempt, which aims to raise awareness of how Fairtrade cotton protects the livilihoods of cotton farmers. The Union will also be hosting a Fairtrade stall and promoting Fairtrade products in their outlets.
During the second week, the Campus Services Division will be running offers on a variety of Fairtrade products in coffee shops, including a special £1.50 deal for a hot drink and Fairtrade flapjack. There will also be opportunities to sample Fairtrade drinks at tasting stands in Bute Coffee Shop (8 March) and Tower Cybercafe (9 March).
Schools and Divisions can also get involved and organise their own events to promote the Fortnight. For example, Information Services will be holding a variety of competitions for its staff, as well as holding a cake stall to raise funds for Tradecraft. The Fairtrade Foundation’s website offers resources and inspiration for anyone wishing to get involved.
The University, together with the Students’ Union was awarded Fairtrade status by the Fairtrade Foundation in 2007.
