Stonewall Leadership Programme 2012 – Call for Applications

13 August 2012

Stonewall’s Leadership Programme is the UK’s only specifically designed course for high talent lesbian, gay and bisexual leaders. This year the University would like to fund two members of staff to attend the programme. Here Professor Terry Threadgold, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Staff and Diversity tells us more about the opportunity.

"The Stonewall Leadership Programme offers delegates the unique freedom to explore the impact their sexual orientation has on their leadership. It allows them to consider why they operate at work in the way they do and how this impacts on their outcomes as leaders.

Over two days the programme enables gay professionals to look at their leadership from the dual perspectives of their sexual orientation and their workplace context. It provides a space where delegates feel safe to discuss how being gay influences their leadership experiences and outcomes.

I’m delighted that the University would like to fund two members of staff to attend the programme which takes place on the 22nd and 23rd November at Ashridge Business School. A maximum of two applications per organisation will be accepted and successful applicants will be notified in October.

Karen Cooke, Chair of ENFYS our staff LGBT+ network attended the course two years ago and said: "The Stonewall Leadership Programme is without doubt the best leadership development course I have attended. The environment that is created on the course, the range of people you meet from different sectors and the opportunity of discussing the importance of sexuality and leadership really does make it a unique experience and one I have hugely benefited from in the way that I work and perform."

Those who are interested in being nominated are asked to apply to the University using specific elements of the application process required by Stonewall themselves:

1. Send us an 850 character (approx 125 words) statement giving personal insights, please tell us about your motivation for applying to the Stonewall Leadership Programme.

2. Include 550 characters (approx 100 words) What role do you think your sexual orientation currently has in your leadership outcomes?

3.  In 450 characters (approx 75 words) What do you hope to do achieve through your leadership on your return to your workplace?

4. Send us a one-page version of your current CV.

Staff who are interested can send their applications to Karen Cooke via email at or address hard copies to Karen at 11th Floor, McKenzie House, 30-36 Newport Road, Cardiff CF24 0DE.

The deadline for applications is Monday 3 September 2012. Once we have received applications we will set up a small panel to be chaired by myself and including members of the LGBT+ Staff Network to select our two nominees.  We will then give them our fullest support in their applications to Stonewall.
