Budding opera stars from around the world will take to the stage for a summer operatic gala concluding their year of specialist training at the University.
The singers have spent the past twelve months developing their operatic skills and receiving a unique blend of vocal and stylistic coaching at the Cardiff International Academy of Voice, under the guidance of internationally renowned tenor Dennis O’Neill.
On Saturday June 13 2009 the students, from countries including Mexico, Korea, Russia and Wales, will give a public performance at the University’s Concert Hall, where guests include members of the public, a host of VIP’s and music critics.
Performing arias and ensembles by composers such as Puccini, Mozart and Verdi, the students will put into practice what they have learned during their time at the Academy.
Welsh operatic student Catrin Aur Davies is one of those performing: "We’ve had the privilege of working with leading figures in the operatic world including Dame Kiri Te Kananwa and Sir Jonathan Miller in the last year. This concert gives us the opportunity to show how far we’ve come, and is another milestone in our operatic careers. "
Catrin is one of a number of Academy students past and present already making a name for themselves in the operatic world. She was recently selected to compete in the Montreal International Music Competition where she reached the semi-finals. Another student from this year’s cohort, Carlos Osuna from Mexico has been accepted into Switzerland’s Theatre Basel Opera Studio for a two year Residency.
Following the gala concert, the students will head to Italy for a two-week residency in the Tuscan town of Barga where they will perform a fully-staged opera, Il Matrimonio Segreto by Cimarossa.
The operatic gala concert starts at 7.00pm on 13 June. Tickets cost £12 full price, £10 concessions and £3 students and are available by calling 03700 101051 or online at http://www.ticketsource.co.uk
