University excellence in undertaking multi-centre clinical trials and other well-designed studies has secured national recognition.
The University’s South East Wales Trials Unit, Wales Cancer Trials Unit and Haematology Clinical Trials Unit, based within the School of Medicine, have all been recognised by the UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC).
The UKCRC aims to improve the quality and quantity of available expertise to carry out trials in the UK by awarding those Units registered status.
To gain UKCRC Registration, Units must demonstrate a track record of experience in coordinating multi-centre trials, employ expert staff to develop studies, have robust quality assurance systems and evidence of long term viability of capacity for trials coordination.
Robert Hills, Director of the Haematology Clinical Trials Unit said: "I think the most important aspect of achieving registered status is the reassurance it gives to clinicians and patients entering our trials. It’s hugely important that patients can be confident that our trials are conducted to the most stringent quality assurance standards by expert staff."
Gareth Griffiths, Director of the Wales Cancer Trials Unit commented: "This achievement for the Units at the Cardiff University School of Medicine will be of great benefit when attracting funding and academic talent to the centres and furthers Wales’ standing in clinical research within the UK."
Kerry Hood, Director of the South East Wales Trials Unit added: "This demonstrates the massive strides undertaken by the Unit since its creation. It speaks volumes for the quality and consistency of the work being undertaken by a team of skilled and dedicated staff."
All three registered units sit within the Institute of Translation, Innovation, Methodology and Engagement (TIME) at the School of Medicine.
