Member of Parliament Madeleine Moon has visited the University as part of a unique ‘pairing’ scheme run by the Royal Society.
Dr Dafydd Evans of the School of Computer Sciences who is a Royal Society University Research Fellow has been paired with Madeleine as part of the Society’s MP-Scientist Pairing Scheme.
The Scheme, established in 2001 as part of the Science in Society programme, aims to build bridges between some of the best research workers in the country and members of the UK parliament. Involving a briefing by the Royal Society, a Week in Westminster, and reciprocal visits to the constituency office and the laboratory, to date 200 scientists and MPs have taken part.
The first meeting between Dr Evans and Madeleine, who is the MP for Bridgend, took place at the University recently. As part of the visit, Madeleine was introduced to ‘science made simple' director Wendy Sadler, after expressing interest in the science outreach work undertaken by the University.
Dr Evans said: "This was Madeleine’s first visit as part of the Scheme, and she wanted to see how the University is communicating science to the wider community. Wendy Sadler and her company ‘science made simple’ provided the perfect showcase for this."
‘science made simple’ uses a range of innovative methods to communicate the message that science is something everyone can enjoy. Wendy and her team demonstrated a range of experiments for Madeleine, all of which they have used to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.
Dr Evans said: "The MP-Scientist Pairing Scheme is a fantastic way to show scientists how their research can inform and influence the political process, and also provides politicians with the opportunity to increase their understanding of science and its role in society."
