Bike week

University staff are being encouraged to go green and get fit with a series of events to celebrate National Bike Week.

Bike Week (16-22 June) will be celebrated across the University with a free ‘Bike2Work’ breakfast, a commuter challenge, organised bike rides and free bike safety checks.

There will also be opportunities to learn more about positiveCycling, enabling members of staff to make savings on the purchase of a bicycle used to commute to work, as part of the recently launched positiveBenefits salary sacrifice scheme.

The Bike Week events, organised by the Cardiff University Bicycle User Group, illustrate the University’s commitment to sustainable transport.

The University is looking at ways to reduce the carbon foot print of staff and students on their journeys to and from the University. A sustainable travel strategy is under development with the help of input gained from a recent travel survey. Staff and students completing the survey were entered into a prize draw to win a commuting bicycle donated by the Bike Shed.

Claire Shelton, Cardiff Law School, was presented with her prize as part of the Bike Week celebrations along with a secure lock for her new bike. Locks are available to purchase for all staff and students from Security Services.

Professor Ken Woodhouse, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Engagement said: "The University’s sustainable travel strategy will benefit staff, students and the environment. The travel survey attracted an outstanding response with more than 3,000 staff and students taking part."

The University will be working with Cardiff City Council, Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust, the Welsh Assembly Government, and the South East Wales Transport Alliance to develop its sustainable travel strategy.
