A new initiative from the School of Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education has been launched to honour Wales’ best medical supervisor or trainer.
The Wales Deanery Best Educational Supervisor and Trainer (BEST) Awards 09 will pay tribute to GPs and Consultants who have demonstrated excellence in the role of Educational Supervisor of Postgraduate Medicine in Wales.
Any Welsh doctor in training has until mid September to nominate who they believe to be among the best medical educational supervisors in Wales. They can nominate Welsh GPs or Consultants, who in their opinion, have performed outstandingly in one of two categories – primary care and secondary care.
Alongside being named Wales’ top educational supervisor or trainer, a Medical Educational Bursary of £5,000 will also be presented to the winner of each BEST category.
Dean of the School, Professor Derek Gallen said: "Wales’ medical educational supervisors and trainers play a vital role in delivering high quality training programmes for our doctors entering the profession and encouraging more trainees to look to Wales to work and live.
"These awards are designed to thank this group of professionals – both GPs and consultants – who are working so hard to support us in providing one of the best postgraduate education programmes in the country."
The BEST Awards 09 will culminate in a gala awards dinner at Cardiff Castle on 20 November 2009. For more information about the awards email BESTawards@cardiff.ac.uk or telephone 02920 687 418.
The School of Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education is responsible for commissioning, overseeing and monitoring the provision of education and training for some 2,600 doctors and dentists in postgraduate training posts in the NHS across Wales.
