New role for pioneering scientist

A pioneering Cardiff professor has been elected as President of the European Thermoelectric Society – the first time that the position has been held by a scientist outside of mainland Europe.

Professor Mike Rowe OBE, Honorary Professor at the School of Engineering was elected to the role at the 2009 International Thermoelectric Conference in Germany.

More than 600 delegates from academia and industry attended the conference and the event included a programme of 403 scientific presentations.

Professor Rowe said: "This is great news for the School of Engineering. It confirms that Cardiff is right at the forefront in this energy technology."

During his career, Professor Rowe has played a pivotal role in establishing thermoelectrics technology, a technology which has been used in a diverse range of devices including nuclear powered cardiac pacemakers and waste heat recovery systems.

He has built up an international reputation which has seen his work showcased globally, including at the 1997 United Nations climate change summit at Kyoto.

Professor Rowe’s research has been used by NASA in thermoelectric generators providing onboard electrical power to deep space missions. Recently Volkswagen unveiled Europe’s first demonstration family-sized car fitted with a thermoelectric generator utilising Professor Rowe’s research. He was also at the forefront of using sub micron powder to control the electrical and thermal properties of materials– what is known today at nanotechnology.

Currently Professor Rowe is collaborating as a consultant in a European Space Agency project to develop and construct in Europe a nuclear powered thermoelectric convertor for space applications.

Professor Rowe’s three year term of office as President of the European Thermoelectric Society starts in September 2010. The Society aims to promote an understanding of the role thermoelectric technology can play in environmental impact and mitigating global climate change.
