A University student has been named the face of a National Youth Campaign launched by the Department for Children, Schools and Families in England.

Tom Buckroyd, a first year physiotherapy student at the School of Healthcare Studies, is taking part in a national ‘19 Under 19s’ campaign aimed at projecting a real image of teenagers today and encouraging more young people to participate in positive leisure time activities.

Tom was selected as one of the 19 most inspiring teenagers in the country in recognition of the active contribution he makes to his local area. Originally from Sutton Coldfield in the West Midlands, Tom is committed to helping children develop through swimming.

Inspired by his younger brother, who has physical difficulties, he trains adults with learning difficulties and children with disabilities to swim and also volunteers at national Special Olympics events. It was watching physiotherapists helping his younger brother that also inspired Tom’s degree choice.

Tom said: "One of the reasons I enjoy coaching is that you can really see the difference it can make to an individual – not just physically but to their outlook on life as their confidence grows".

Tom also swims with the senior team at Birmingham’s Boldmere Swimming Club and competes at national level.
