30 September 2011
There will be plenty in store for chamber and orchestral fans in Cardiff this season with the launch of the 2011/12 University Concert Series.
Running until May 2012, the programme includes the University’s ensemble-in-residence, a range of visiting artists, student concerts, and special events in collaboration with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the Welsh National Opera (WNO).
The series will be opened by ensemble-in-residence the Carducci Quartet on Tuesday 4 October. Recognised internationally as one of today’s most exciting young string quartets and comprised of two husband and wife teams, the group has established an enthusiastic world-wide following. Over the coming year they will be performing in Denmark, France, the USA, and venues throughout the UK. Audiences in Cardiff will have opportunities to hear them in six concerts between October and March.
Visiting artists will include vocal ensemble Exaudi, jazz guitarist Jake Hertzog (the youngest ever winner of the Montreux Jazz Festival Guitar Prize), virtuoso pianist David Wilde and young Swiss violinist Deborah Marchetti. Students at the School of Music will also be performing in many of Cardiff’s main venues, including Llandaff Cathedral, BBC Hoddinott Hall, and St David’s Hall.
The School of Music is also collaborating with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the WNO on three special events, beginning with a study day devoted to the music of French composer Andre Jolivet. In March, the School will host an international conference investigating and celebrating the rich legacy of Paul Sacher, conductor and musical philanthropist.
Taking its cue from the WNO’s Spring season, the School is also organizing an international conference on nineteenth-century opera in May.
