Remember the good old days when fuel was cheap? Just ten years ago a litre of petrol cost 80p and it could still be that affordable if you sign up to the University’s Liftshare scheme and share your journey to work.
The Liftshare matching service identifies people travelling in the same direction or to a similar destination and puts them in contact with each other. They can then travel together and share the costs, while reducing congestion and pollution on our roads.
The service is free for staff and students and those who sign up and recommend another member before 9th October could win £250.
Liftshare Week is a new initiative taking place from 4 – 8 October which aims to enable individuals, businesses and communities to discover the benefits of car-sharing. The Wild West themed promotional campaign surrounding the initiative encourages drivers not to be "lone rangers" by using liftshare.com a free car-sharing matching service with over 350,000 members.
With petrol prices hitting a record high this year, and the recession still having a very real impact on people’s pockets the benefits of sharing the cost of your commute is easy to see.
In fact the average amount saved by car-sharing to work is £20 per week. Not to mention it is good for the environment, can help reduce stress and makes journeys more sociable.
Peter McDonnell, the University’s Liftshare Scheme Manager said: "The scheme is simple and open to all. You don’t even need your own car – many members would be happy to give you a lift, in return for a contribution to their fuel costs and some friendly company."
