A leading designer and manufacturer of lightweight, portable lifting systems has hailed a University partnership designed to help businesses tap into new knowledge and develop new and innovative products.
REID Lifting Ltd manufactures portable lifting systems and relies on innovative new designs to maintain its position in the specialist lifting market.
With the support of a University Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) a recent engineering graduate – known as a KTP Associate - has worked alongside the company and experts from the University’s School of Engineering to develop a new product to help extend and improve the company’s product range.
REID's KTP Associate, Peter Italiano, said: "The KTP programme has allowed REID and I to work closely with the academics at Cardiff University's School of Engineering, developing a new product while providing practical experience and additional projects for other students at the university."It has also given me a thorough introduction into a design engineering position where I have been able to make an early contribution to REID's new product portfolio while gaining experience not only of product design and development but marketing and manufacturing aspects as well."
In just over 12 months, the KTP has resulted in the development of a new lightweight, rapid deployment gantry system that folds down into its own structure for compact stowage and portability.
REID’s Sales and Marketing Director, Phillip Ellis added: "It has been a very productive and enjoyable experience working with the University and KTP advisor. The new PORTA-GANTRY RAPIDE proves the success of the programme, with further developments to follow."
KTPs are designed to help businesses improve their competitiveness and productivity through the better use of knowledge, technology and skills that reside in Universities. KTP is funded by the Technology Strategy Board along with other funding organisations.
Gareth Evans, the University’s Head of Business Development, said: "The Cardiff University KTP Office manage 26 KTP projects currently, with a view to grow this number further. The popularity and demand for KTP from our industry and academic partners demonstrates the considerable opportunities this Government sponsored collaboration continues to provide.
"This particular KTP typifies this and I'm delighted to congratulate the partnership on their success."
