University alumnus David Melding AM has been elected the National Assembly’s Deputy Presiding Officer.
David Melding graduated in Economics and Politics from the University before completing his MA in Government at the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, USA.
As Deputy Presiding Officer, Mr Melding will support the Presiding Officer Rosemary Butler AM in organising Assembly business and keeping members in order during Plenary sessions.
Professor David Boucher, Head of the School of European studies, said: "Our congratulations go to David Melding for his election as Deputy Presiding Officer.
"I remember David well as a young undergraduate when I first taught at Cardiff in the early eighties. He always had political ambitions even then. We had an exchange lecturer from William and Mary, Professor Ronald Rapport, who was very impressed by David Melding and invited him to continue his studies in the States.
"It’s nice to see any alumnus reach high public office – but especially a Politics graduate to reach such a senior position in the National Assembly.
"David Melding is widely recognised and respected across the political spectrum for his experience and commitment to devolution and Welsh politics – which he will bring to this new role.
"On behalf of the School of European Studies we wish him well."
Prior to becoming an Assembly Member, David Melding was manager of the Carers National Association in Wales and a former Deputy Director of the Welsh Centre for International Affairs.
He previously stood in Blaenau Gwent in the 1992 General Election and Cardiff Central in 1997 General Election, before being elected as a Welsh Conservative AM via the South Wales Central regional list in 1999.
David Melding is the former Shadow Minister for Economic Development and Welsh Conservative Director of Policy.
He has previously chaired the Assembly's Audit, Health and Social Services, and Standards of Conduct Committees and, before the 2007 elections, was spokesman on local government and public services.
As the party's Policy Director David Melding wrote the Welsh Conservatives' manifestos for the 2003, 2007 and 2011 Assembly elections.
