Investing in Cardiff people

Staff from across the University have gathered to celebrate Cardiff’s commitment to creating a positive working environment through developing leadership and management capability.

More than 70 members of academic and support staff from across the University were invited to Aberdare Hall to The Annual Leadership Awards Ceremony to receive their certificates from the Vice Chancellor, Dr David Grant.

The event marked the successful completion of their Leadership and Management Development Programmes completed during 2010 / 2011.

Dr Grant congratulated them on their achievement and urged them to continue to be ambitious in their leadership, he said: "The Leadership and Management Development Programmes build confidence in staff to apply their knowledge and understanding to turn challenge into foresight.

"I urge all awardees to be ambitious in their leadership, particularly during these uncertain times. Through our continued investment in our people I believe the University can turn this period of change into one of great opportunity."

Since 2007, more than 400 members of staff have successfully completed at least one of the four programmes. These programmes provide leadership and management development opportunities for staff from all areas and all disciplines of the University.

Four programmes have been developed including the Heads of Schools Development Programme which aims to engage and assist newly appointed Heads of Schools as they face the challenges of leadership and the change agenda. There are also programmes for research team leaders and one for first-time line managers.

Speaking about how she has benefited from the Leading and Managing Teams course, Senior Assistant Residences Manager at Aberdare Hall Emma Ballinger said: "This course was really helpful to me in my current role as it taught me both theoretical and practical skills. It was also really nice to meet with people from other departments in similar positions and discuss different issues."

The University’s continuing development of its leaders, managers and supervisors played a significant role in securing the recent Investors in People (IIP) accreditation. Cardiff is one of the largest organisations in Wales to receive IIP recognition and the first of the 20 Russell Group research-intensive universities to gain the standard across the whole institution.

In November 2010 the programme for research team leaders was recognised with the Times Higher Education award for ‘Outstanding Contribution to Leadership Development’. The judges described Cardiff University's approach to preparing researchers for leadership and management roles as "rigorous and comprehensive" and that the University was "probably the most committed to this kind of development activity in the UK".
