A Cardiff student competing in the London 2012 Paralympics has secured a bronze medal in the 4x100m T37 relay.

Jenny McLoughlin, a student at the University’s School of English, Communication and Philosophy, raced in the final of the athletics event on Tuesday 4th September. She ran the last leg for Team GB and brought the team home in third place in a season’s best time of 56:08 seconds.

Jenny, a member of the University’s High Performance Programme, also competed in the 100m T37 race, finishing seventh overall with a personal best of 14.48 seconds, and the 200m T37 race in which she finished fifth.

Stuart Vanstone, Head of Sport at Cardiff said: "It was a fantastic achievement for Jenny to qualify for the Paralympic Games. Her bronze medal is the first ever for a Cardiff student and she performed exceptionally well in both the final of the 100m and 200m. Jenny is an outstanding sportswoman who has excelled as part of Cardiff’s High Performance Sports Programme. The University is extremely proud of her Paralympic achievements and we look forward to celebrating her success when she returns to Cardiff."

Jenny got involved in athletics when she was 14, joining a running club in Wales in 2005. Her breakthrough came in 2007 when she won a gold medal in the 100m at the UK School Games. Since then, Jenny made her Paralympic debut aged 16 at the 2008 Games in Beijing and has won a silver medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi competing in the T37 100m. The T37 category is amongst classes 31–38 which are for athletes with cerebral palsy.

Cardiff’s High Performance Programme provides elite sportsmen and women with the opportunity to develop their sporting potential whilst studying at a prestigious University. Benefits include structured sport and academic support, access to physiotherapists and sports psychologists, and possible financial assistance.
