Flexible solar cells will set new standards of convenience and economy in solar energy conversion and will help to promote the acceptance of renewable energy technology, a leading expert will argue in a lecture at the University.
Professor Michael Grätzel of Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland, has pioneered research on solar energy. He has specifically focused on the area of electron transfer reactions and their applications in systems for solar energy harvesting and conversion. He discovered revolutionary new types of solar cell based on dye sensitized nanocrystalline semiconducting oxide particles.
In his Distinguished Lecture at Cardiff on 22nd March 2012, Professor Grätzel will trace the development of the new lightweight flexible solar cells, highlighting their low cost, ease of production and widespread benefits in commercial applications.
He will argue that these new solar cells can help transform renewable energy not only because of their ease of use but because of widespread cost benefits.
Ahead of the lecture, a symposium on Advances in Solar Energy will take place involving eminent speakers from the University, Imperial College London, the University of Oxford and Glyndŵr University, outlining their cutting-edge work in this area.
