Neuroscience and Mental Health Research Institute Patron, Stephen Fry has been appointed President of one of the UK’s leading mental health charities.
Stephen Fry has been a Mind supporter for a number of years and was named Mind Champion in 2007 for his award-winning documentary The Secret Life of a Manic Depressive, which explored his experiences of living with bipolar disorder.He worked with Professor Nick Craddock on his documentary and came to the University’s School of Medicine in 2006 to discuss his condition and contribute to Professor Craddock’s research into Bipolar Disorder. Commenting on his appointment, Stephen Fry said: "I am honoured and delighted to become the new President of Mind. This wonderful charity performs vital work to help anyone, like myself, who experiences a mental health problem.
"It is a privilege to follow in the footsteps of Lord Melvyn Bragg, and I can only hope to live up to the standard that he has set in his fifteen successful years at the helm."
He has also previously fronted Mind’s ‘Get it off your chest’ campaign, aimed at getting men to recognise the importance of talking about their problems, and has also been an ambassador for Time to Change, our anti-stigma campaign.
Stephen Fry became the Patron of the Neuroscience and Mental Health Research Institute in 2011 and was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the University in 2010.
Professor Nick Craddock, said: "I am delighted that Stephen Fry is to become the next President of Mind. He has already done much to reduce the stigma around mental health through his television documentary and his writing.
"I am certain that he will prove to be an inspiring leader of Mind and will continue to provide hope and inspiration to anyone who experiences a mental health problem."
