The UK’s biggest competition to find talented new science communicators is coming to Cardiff giving members of the public the chance to see the next generation of stars in action.
The Beacon for Wales from Cardiff University has teamed up with FameLab to give enthusiastic early career scientists in and around Cardiff the chance to demonstrate their skills.
Set up in 2005, FameLab is designed to help people communicate science subjects to a wider audience, whether in schools, through public events or through the media.
Competitions are held in more than 15 different countries and this year, the Beacon for Wales is hosting one of six autumn regional heats of FameLab. The Cardiff event will take place in Chapter Arts Centre on Saturday 12 November 2011.
Bruce Etherington of the Beacon for Wales said: "This is a great opportunity to see some of the best scientists and engineers showing their passion for their work and providing great entertainment at the same time. We are delighted to have the opportunity to put this event on in Cardiff."
Contestants will have just three minutes to explain a complex science, maths or engineering topic in a dynamic and engaging way to a panel of judges including 2005 FameLab winner Dr Mark Lewney and award winning science communicator Wendy Sadler.
The best communicators from the heats will go on to vie for the title of FameLab champion at the National Final on 21 March 2012 at the Royal Institution of Great Britain. The winner will receive £1000 for themselves and up to £750 to spend on a science communication activity, whether it’s attending a conference, further training or developing a public event or activity.
The FameLab heat takes place on the 12th of November, is open to the public and free to attend. The first round starts at 1.00pm and the regional final will take place at 4.30pm. To take part as a contestant contact firstname.lastname@example.org
