Cardiff prides itself in being the only academic centre for optometry in Wales. Helen Morris, Practice Manager of Cardiff University Optometrists tells Blas how staff and their family and friends can get free eye tests whilst supporting current students in their training.
"Vision has a huge impact on our lives yet many of us do not associate eyes with health and do not have regular sight tests even if we notice a change in our vision.
Regular eye examinations should be as much a part of you and your family's routine as a visit to the dentist. Anyone can develop sight problems which is why regular examinations are so essential.
We pride ourselves on being at the forefront of eye care and Cardiff University is the only academic centre for optometry in Wales.
During term time students conduct free eye examinations supervised by qualified optometrists and gain the necessary experience of working with real patients as they train to professional standards, leading to their final qualification.
This service is available to all Cardiff University staff as well as the public. All you have to do is give up 90 minutes of your time to sit for a final year student and as a token of our appreciation you will receive a 20% discount off the cost of new spectacles.
If you wear contact lenses or would like to try them, Cardiff University Optometrists offers free appointments every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon during term time, carried out by final year optometry students working under supervision.
We are fully equipped to offer eye care to the public and are open all year round and provision exists for staff regularly using display screen equipment.
I hope as many of you as possible will consider coming along to support our students. The teaching clinic provides the same high quality eye care as our resident optometrist clinics, but allow the next generation of optometrists to gain valuable clinical experience."
