With a new report revealing how the economic impact on Wales as host nation of the Ryder Cup was £82.4M , leading business and tourism experts are set to take part in a debate about whether the ‘Ryder-effect’ can be emulated for other major events.
Organised by Cardiff University Innovation Network, the free event will provide an opportunity to consider events such as the Ryder Cup, Wales Rally GB, Green Man and the Hay Festivals, and ask whether they actually generate revenue for Welsh businesses in the long term – or whether they just bring short term gains.
Director of Visit Wales Jonathan Jones, Richard Thomas, managing director of Cardiff & Co, and Dr Calvin Jones from the University’s Centre for Business Relationships, Accountability, Sustainability & Society will be looking at the key aims of the Assembly Government’s ‘Major Events Strategy for Wales 2010 -2020, and taking part in a Q&A Session about the financial, environmental and reputational aspects of major events, and whether there is scope to stimulate new enterprise and business growth. Businesses, entrepreneurs and communities will have the chance to discuss how they can better connect with the value chain and seize these opportunities.
Dr Calvin Jones, who specialises in the study of the economic impact of major sporting events, says: "We’ve come to realise in Wales that whilst events and festivals may potentially bring significant benefits, these benefits don’t arise as a matter of course, but need identifying and nurturing. This event will help us explore how we can make the most of events, both at the regional scale, and right down to the level of individual businesses and communities."
‘Events in Wales: A Lasting Legacy for Welsh Businesses?’ takes place at Cardiff University’s School of Optometry and Vision Sciences on Wednesday 6th April from 6.30pm and is free to attend.
