Ebbw Vale’s fifteen-year-old Climate Change Champion, Bronwen Davies found herself at University three years early this week after taking part in Cardiff University Sustainability Week (31 October – 4 November), in a bid to help students and members of staff to reduce their carbon footprint.
To help Wales reduce its carbon footprint, Bronwen, 15, from Ebbw Vale, who is a pupil at Glyncoed Comprehensive School, spoke with the students and staff in a bid to collect pledges as a part of the Welsh Government’s ‘11 actions for 2011’ campaign, urging them to pledge to at least three of the 11 low carbon actions suggested.
Climate Change Champion, Bronwen Davies said: "Cardiff University was a great location to talk to people about what they can do to become more energy efficient, save money and help cut Wales' carbon footprint.
"There was a definite trend in some of the pledges that the students picked. It was great to see that many already walked or cycled for short trips, they were more likely to ‘get their jumpers on’ rather than turning up the thermostat and they didn’t seem to mind pledging to spend one minute less in the shower – let’s hope they keep to their promise!"
Sustainability Week is a week-long event run by Cardiff University, which includes talks, discussions, film screenings, food co-operatives, and pledging to encourage people to work together to help live more sustainable lives.
Professor Terry Marsden, Director of the Sustainable Places Research Institute, said: "It is inspiring to see how Bronwen, as a busy teenager, is so actively involved in climate change issues."Bronwen played such a fantastic role before the Sustainability Week debate, with the ’11 Actions for 2011’ campaign fitting perfectly alongside the main purpose of the week."Sustainability Week aims to engage people on issues of sustainability, to adopt some tips to become more sustainable and to see how they as individuals can make a difference and perhaps encourage those around them to do the same – Bronwen delivered this message flawlessly"
