Thousands of Welsh consultants are being given the opportunity to further boost their careers and those of young medics thanks to a new specialist educational supervisor course.
Run by the Wales Postgraduate Deanery, the course, which has been developed in response to new guidelines from the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board, is aimed at consultants who supervise trainee doctors, and those who teach undergraduate medical students.
Induction Training for Educators will allow in the region of 2,000 consultants from across Wales to better support and monitor the progression of training grade doctors and students working and studying across the NHS in Wales.
Dr Peter Donnelly, Associate Dean at Cardiff School of Postgraduate Medical & Dental Education said: "Wales is leading the way in medical postgraduate training. We have developed this course and many others like it in direct response to new guidelines from the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board, and will ensure we continue to provide structured support for consultants in their roles as Educational Supervisors."
Lynne Allery, Director of Medical Education said "The Wales Deanery has a long pedigree of delivering high quality education and these induction initiatives further evidence our pre-eminence in the field of medical education."
The short training courses, which are free of charge, will be held at various NHS Trusts across Wales throughout June, July and September this year and will count towards Continuing Professional Development. They also serve as a preliminary to the ‘Essentials for Educational Supervisors’ programme, and e-learning and face-to-face courses, such as the Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma & MSc. These are delivered by the Medical Education Unit in the Deanery and provide a stepped approach to supporting Consultants in their educational roles.
