Creating a sustainable research agenda

16 February 2009

A leading figure in the European Commission will argue the case for greater research involvement in sustainability at the University tomorrow night (Tuesday, February 17).

Dr Nicole Dewandre, Head of the Sustainable Development Unit in the European Commission Directorate General for Research, will speak on What can Research and Development do for Sustainability?

In May, the European Commission is to host a conference in Brussels on how best to reform European research to meet sustainable development challenges. It will also look at ways to improve the link between science and policy-making and between science and society.

In her talk at Cardiff, Dr Dewandre will look at the present links between sustainability policy and research policy in the EU. She will ask what the research community can do to advance sustainability and explain how the European Commission is organised to engage member states in this task.

Cardiff is already well-placed as an international leader in sustainable research, with work from its academics being presented at a number of global conferences on climate change. Over the past five years, the University has received more than £35m in external funding for research projects into various aspects of sustainability, involving more than 120 researchers from 11 different academic schools.

Cardiff University Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research, Professor Teresa Rees, who invited Dr Dewandre to the University, said: "We are delighted to welcome a leading thinker on the sustainability agenda to Cardiff. The University has strengths in many areas of sustainability research, including social sciences, engineering, biosciences, business and the earth and ocean sciences, and we look forward to hearing from Nicole how we can work more closely with the European Commission in this regard."

The lecture is co-hosted by the University’s Regeneration Institute and the Research and Commercial Division. It begins at 6pm in the Committee Rooms, Glamorgan Building. To attend, please contact Dr Rebecca Edwards on or 029 208 706014.
