A stunning selection of photographs showcasing the University’s campus, work, creativity and culture are on display as part of a new exhibition.

Part of the University’s 125th Anniversary celebrations in 2008, the competition generated more than 900 entries from around the world in four categories: University Campus, My Work, Cardiff Life and Use Your Imagination.

Monthly prize winners were selected by a different member of University staff each month with Vice-Chancellor, Dr David Grant, choosing the competition’s four overall winners. Dr Grant announced the winners and presented them with their prizes at the exhibition launch.

Cormac West took first prize in the University Campus category, for his picture of Main Building under an incredibly lit sky. Cormac won a Nikon D40 digital SLR camera.

The winner of the My Work category was Dr Peter Brabham, of the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, for his self portrait in the Swiss Alps. The prize for this category was a Toshiba satellite laptop.

Rachel Thomas was awarded an iPod Touch for her winning picture of the arcades in Cardiff city centre in the Cardiff Life category.

The winner of the Use your Imagination category was Richard Wood, of the University’s Information Services Directorate, for his picture of footsteps in the snow, taken outside St John’s Church in Cardiff. The prize for this category was £150 of Amazon vouchers.

Dr Grant said: "The standard of entries to the competition was exceptionally high. The attention given to picture composition and detail was outstanding. Choosing the winning photograph in each category was not an easy task. Congratulations to all four of the grand prize winners and the monthly winners."

The Cardiff University Through The Lens exhibition is on display at the Viriamu Jones Gallery in Main Building. The winning images are also featured in a specially created book to coincide with the exhibition, which can be previewed and bought at www.cardiff.ac.uk/125photobook
