When Dr Judith Hall from Cardiff University’s School of Medicine learned that the equivalent of a Boeing 747 of mothers die in childbirth every single day in Africa she decided she had to do something.
Mothers of Africa is an educational charity set up by the School of Medicine’s Department of Anaesthetics & Intensive Care Medicine with NHS Wales colleagues in response to maternal mortality figures in Sub-Saharan Africa. The charity aims to help countries like Benin, a country which has only 11 anaesthetists for 11 million people. In Cardiff alone there are 140 anaesthetists.
Dr Judith Hall, Head of the Department of Anaesthetics & Intensive Care Medicine said: "In certain countries up to 1 in 50 women die in child birth, the kind of death that is just very, very rare in the developed world. We hope to help in some small way by assisting in the education of doctors, nurses and medical support staff to delivery anaesthesia to pregnant mothers."
The educational charity has already sent teams from Cardiff University and the University Hospital of Wales to Benin, Togo and Ethiopia.
One of the UK's leading tenors, Wynne Evans is supporting the work of Mothers of Africa at a concert to be held in Llandaff Cathedral (31 January 2008). Wynne will be joined by two sopranos from the University’s Cardiff International Academy of Voice and the Choir Cor Caerdydd. The concert ‘Cardiff sings Classics’ - in aid of Mothers of Africa is part of Cardiff University’s 125th anniversary celebrations in 2008.
Wynne Evans said: "The Cardiff anaesthetics department have been there for the successful birth of my children and I'm delighted to support them in their aim to improve the safety of childbirth for mothers in Africa."
