Leading architectural research helping to develop new ways of providing a sustainable future for post-industrial areas in Wales and beyond is set to be boosted by leading US expertise after securing a major new research partnership.
Cardiff University’s Welsh School of Architecture is the first in Wales to have successfully secured funding from the prestigious British Council Partnership Fund - a £20,000 grant designed to boost academic research links between US and UK universities.
The partnership will see the Welsh School of Architecture link-up with Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champion, Carnegie Mellon University, and The School of the Art Institute in Chicago to help kick-start new research in sustainable post-industrial transformations, develop joint courses and encourage student exchange.
"We are delighted to be the first in Wales to have secured such a prestigious Partnership Fund from the British Council," according to Mhairi McVicar from the Welsh School of Architecture.
"The partnership offers the Welsh School of Architecture new opportunities for research and teaching initiatives, as well as staff and student exchanges with some of the US’ leading universities," she adds.
As well as staff and student exchanges, a workshop and a symposium is planned which will study post industrial urban and rural landscapes in Wales and the USA and explore their potential for environmental and cultural regeneration.
Over half of the UK’s 200 universities applied for the fund, demonstrating the UK’s demand for developing strategic partnerships with the US. In total some 31 UK projects were awarded funding from the British Council, the UK’s international cultural relations organization, to kick-start new research, joint course development and faculty and student exchanges. In October, American and UK higher education leaders will meet at Windsor Castle to evaluate the progress of the new partnership fund projects and discuss next steps in advancing the strategic US-UK higher education partnership. All of the UK Universities to receive the British Council New Partnerships Fund can be found at: www.britishcouncil.org/usa-about-us-newsroom-press-releases-new-partnership-fund-recipients.htm
