12 November 2010
The Observance of the Two Minute Silence on 11 November was marked with an Act of Remembrance in the John Viriamu Jones Gallery, Main Building.
Past and present students and staff of the University gathered alongside representatives of the University Royal Naval Unit, the Officer Training Corps, and the Air Squadron to honour those members of the University who have given their lives in the service of their country during the World Wars and other military campaigns.
Those assembled were welcomed by Dr David Grant, Vice-Chancellor and the service was led by the Reverend Dr Trystan Owain Hughes, the University’s Anglican Chaplain. Prayers were read during the service by Mr Bill John, University Vice-President and a former student, and Bronwen Rickard, a final year student at the School of Welsh.
During the service, wreaths were laid on the University’s War Memorials by the Reverend John D Marshall, Association of Past Students, Olly Birrell, Students’ Union President, and representatives from the University of Wales Officer Training Corps.
The war memorials, located outside the Science Library in Main Building, contain the names of one hundred and seventy three staff and students who died during the two World Wars.
