Cardiff University celebrates National Bike Week

16 June 2007

Cardiff University is gearing up for a week long programme of events in conjunction with National Bike Week.

Free safety checks for bicycles, rides for novice and experienced cyclists and a breakfast for staff will be available at the University throughout the week as part of the UK’s annual celebration of cycling.

Peter Dorrington, a PhD student at Cardiff Business School is a member of the University’s Bicycle User Group and one of the organisers of Cardiff bike week: "Bike week is a great opportunity for Cardiff staff and students to discover (or re-discover) the appeal of cycling. The obvious benefits of cycling include improved health and fitness, financial savings - a bike is the cheapest of all vehicles to run, and parking is free - along with the positive impact on the environment.

Cardiff University's Bike Task Group has been promoting cycling issues within the University for over a year now, and bike week is seen as a positive step in promoting a greener transport policy within Cardiff University."

National Bike week runs between the 16 - 24 June and all money raised from donations will be split between the Bike Week's national charity Leukaemia Research, and Cardiff University's Social and Community Action Network (SCAN)
