Two Cardiff University spin-out companies have been named in a list of Wales' leading start-up businesses.

‘Science made simple’, a spin-out company from the School of Physics and Astronomy and 'Q-Chip', from the School of Engineering, are included in The Wales Hot 100 list.

Both companies were judged to have shown "success in the early start-up years" and to have "demonstrated the entrepreneurial potential to become a significant business in the future."

‘Science made simple’ founded by Wendy Sadler, schools liaison officer for the School of Physics and Astronomy, aims to enthuse people about science by using interactive presentations and visual demonstrations, tailormade for schools and for the public.The listing follows earlier success this year when Wendy Sadler received the Descartes Prize for Excellence in Science Communication - following in the footsteps of previous winners David Attenborough and Bill Bryson.

Q-Chip, set up to exploit research undertaken by Professor David Barrow of the School of Engineering, is a drug delivery company developing controlled release systems for biological therapeutics. Q-Chip has rapidly established itself as one of the leading developers of advanced microsphere based life science and therapeutic products. Collaborative opportunities are currently being exploited in the field of medical devices, drug delivery and molecular reagents.

The Wales Hot 100 list is a joint project between Cardiff University’s Centre for Advanced Studies and the Welsh Enterprise Institute at the University of Glamorgan.

Professor Dylan Jones-Evans, co-director of The Welsh National Entrepreneurship Observatory said: "The profiles of the firms within the Hot 100 demonstrate the wide diversity of entrepreneurial opportunities that exist across regions and sectors within Wales.

"Like many before them, the individuals that have established firms within the Hot 100 are the heroes of the future, taking risks and developing opportunities for new products, markets and services, and establishing Wales at the forefront of the knowledge economy."
