A sustainable local transport project supported by staff from the University is part of a bid that has made it into the final of a television programme to win funding of £50M.
The River Ely Bridge which will provide pedestrian and cycle access between Cardiff and Penarth is one of the schemes that will benefit if Sustrans Connect2 win the ITV 1 programme ‘The People’s £50 million Lottery Giveaway’.
Last year University staff campaigned at the site of the proposed bridge to highlight the need for a convenient commuter cycle route across the River Ely. The Bridge is now one of 79 proposals across the UK that comprises the Sustrans Connect2 bid for the £50M.
Sustrans Connect2 aims to revitalise walking and cycling in communities across Britain by overcoming transport gaps in sustainable ways. In order to secure the prize money which is provided by the Big Lottery Fund, Sustrans Connect2 needs to beat off competition from three other projects in a public vote.
Professor Justin Lewis, Head of the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies is one of those supporting the Sustrans bid: "Sustrans Connect2 is an important project that deserves the public vote. The Ely Bridge development will encourage a lot more people, including Cardiff University staff and students to cycle or walk to their daily destinations and across the UK millions of people will benefit from similar schemes. Of all the projects, this will do the most to promote environmentally friendly transport across the UK."
The University actively promotes sustainable ways of travel to staff members. As well as operating the Cardiff University Liftshare Scheme, the University has adopted an official bike strategy which looks into more visible bike racks, better signing of routes, more drying rooms for wet clothing and a map of bike user’s facilities around campus.
Staff, students, alumni or members of the public wishing to vote for the Sustrans Connect2 project can do so online via www.thepeoples50million.org.uk. Online voting starts on Monday 26 November with telephone voting commencing on Friday 7 December. More information about Sustrans Connect2 can be found at http://www.sustransconnect2.org.uk/ and people can also register for a voting reminder at the site.
