Following composition study with David Wynne and Alun Hoddinott, Timothy Taylor was appointed to the University staff in 1978. In the same year his Clarinet Sonata was a prizewinner at the Stroud Festival Composition Competition. His selection by the Arts Council of Wales in 1982 as one of six ‘Young Welsh Composers’ was followed by several commissions, including Kammermusik for Chamber Ensemble premiered at the Llandaff Festival by the Gemini Ensemble and subsequently performed in London and recorded by the BBC. Several works were commissioned for the 1983-4 Centenary Celebrations for Cardiff University including the anthem I Will Magnify Thee and the orchestration of the College Song. In the 1990s he established the University’s electro-acoustic studios and this led to an interest in computer-generated sounds culminating in a large-scale son-et-lumière piece The Dream of John of Crewkerne (2000) to celebrate the millennium.
Timothy Taylor was the conductor of the University Choir & Symphony Orchestra 1987-2008 and in 2004 was appointed conductor of the Cardiff Bach Choir.
Since 2008 Dr Taylor has been Director of Undergraduate Studies in the School of Music.
