The Institute of Medical Genetics provides an environment in which molecular geneticists and cytogeneticists, molecular biologists and bioinformaticians work in conjunction with clinical scientists, psychologists and social scientists, to better understand the genetic bases of disease and the consequences for affected individuals, their families, and for society in general.
The Institute also houses the hub of the NHS Medical Genetics Service for Wales. Many of the research successes of the Institute have been achieved by accepting the challenges presented by families with inherited disorders who are seen in our clinics. Conversely, our research has lead to new and improved services in clinical and laboratory genetics, often influencing practice nationally and internationally.
Education and training form a key part of the activities of the Institute, and relevant opportunities and a variety of teaching courses are listed on this website. Information is also given detailing our Research groups, the Human Gene Mutation Database (HGMD) that is maintained at the Institute as a service to the scientific community and links to the Wales Gene Park whose role is to facilitate the integration of genetics knowledge into healthcare, education and commercial exploitation in Wales.
We always welcome enquiries from all those who are interested in collaboration and also from those who may wish to consider our Institute as a place to undertake research or training.
