Noncommutative Geometry and Operator Algebras at Cardiff:

David E. Evans: Research Grants

The operator algebras group is supported by a variety of sources, including (since 1996): EPSRC, EU, the Royal Society, the LMS, the University of Wales Academic Support fund and the GB-Sasakawa Foundation. In particular, external funding has supported more than 17 postdoctoral man-years since 1996 (Boca 5, Boeckenhauer 4, Goldstein 2.5, Winkler 1, Isola 0.5, Nazarov 1, Goto 1, Neshveyev 1, Jones 0.5).

Prospective postdocs and graduate students who are interested in coming to Cardiff can look at the following sources for possible support as well as contacting David E Evans:

·  EPSRC has two kinds of postdoctoral research fellowships. These are

·  Postdoctoral fellowships : shortly or immediately after completing a PhD. They provide funding to cover the fellow’s salary and a small amount of travel and subsistence, equipment and consumables. The fellowships last for up to three years.
There is an annual call for proposals around June with a deadline of September.

·  Career Acceleration Fellowships : These provide support for more experienced young researchers with between 3 and 10 years of postdoctoral, industrial or equivalent experience. Time out of research for family reasons will be taken into account.
Up to five years’ funding is available, and there is an annual call for proposals – around August with deadline later in the autumn.

·  EPSRC also has grants for graduate students. For British students they cover living expenses as well as fees. They are open to EU students, in that the grants cover the fees, but then EU students are eligible to apply to Cardiff for studentships to cover expenses. See also EPSRC student pages.

·  EU has Marie Curie Fellowships

·  The Royal Society has a range of programmes and projects which it supports for visits of various lengths - not necessarily at postdoctoral level but also for those who may hold permanent appointments elsewhere.

·  The British Council

·  London Mathematical Society
