The Mathematics degree schemes at Cardiff will equip you with specialist numerical skills and develop your capacity for logical and analytical thought. These are qualities which are in demand across a broad range of stimulating and rewarding careers.

Potential Careers for Mathematics graduates

A Maths degree opens up numerous job opportunities. Mathematical aptitude is seen as valuable in in finance related jobs such as actuarial work, accountancy, banking etc. But there are many other possibilities, from code breaking to weather forecasting, from engineering to logistics.  A number of our students go on to further study at either a Masters or PhD level.

Skills gained as a Maths student

Of particular importance are the numeracy, logic, and problem solving skills that you will gain through your degree scheme. You will also gain other general skills such as time management, independence, communication, IT skills and adaptability. You have the opportunity to develop your IT skills as well as general research skills.

Work Experience Opportunities

The placement year provides students with the opportunity to gain a taste of employment for a year. Placements are paid also, typically £18,000 to £24,000 per year. For more information, see.
However there are many other opportunities at Cardiff also. Our careers officer helps students find internships and summer jobs which are extremely valuable on your cv. Students interested in a career in teaching have the opportunity to tutor in local schools.

Careers Advice

Mandy Jones is the Career consultant for Mathematics students. She offers the opportunity to all students for one to one meetings to discuss career plans and to offer advice. Advice is available for our graduates as well as current students.

Career Management Skills sessions are offered in Year 2 of our degree schemes to help students understand the employability skills developed throughout our degrees and explain how to articulate these to employers. Training in cv preparation, aptitude tests, interviews etc is offered to all students. The Careers service also offers a range of fairs, employer presentations and employer lead skills sessions giving our students the opportunity to meet employers. A number of employers visit the School of Mathematics each year; these include GCHQ, Price Waterhouse Coopers and ATASS (sports modelling company).
