Success for Cardiff at Royal Television Society awards

The RTS ‘Lifetime Achievement’ award presented by Professor Sambrook to Professor Richard Tait
Cardiff's Centre for Journalism alumni were amongst the winners at the recent Royal Television Society (RTS) awards for 2011/2012.
Cardiff’s winning alumni were Ciaran Jenkins at Channel 4 News for ‘Young Journalist of the Year’ and Alex Thomson, again from Channel 4 News, for ‘Television Journalist of the Year’.
The award for ‘Specialist Journalist of the Year’ was awarded to the University’s Honorary Fellow and BBC News Middle East Editor Jeremy Bowen.
Cardiff was represented on both sides of the podium as Chair of the judging panel Professor Richard Sambrook presented the evening’s awards.
The presentation of the RTS’ prestigious ‘Lifetime Achievement’ award by Professor Sambrook to Cardiff’s former Director of the Centre for Journalism Professor Richard Tait sealed a successful night for the School.
Alex Thomson, Channel 4 News, won ‘Television Journalist of the Year’
Prior to joining Cardiff University, Professor Tait had been editor of BBC Newsnight, of Channel 4 News and Editor in Chief of ITN. The awards dedication stated, “He has been a strong influence on British broadcast journalism across multiple channels and in many different capacities.
“He has been a stalwart defender of thoughtful independent journalism throughout his career… While at ITN he resolutely stood up for the organisation's journalism when - for example with the Serbian Camps - it came under attack.
“In addition he has played a leading role with developing journalism safety around the world, has actively worked for media rights with the International Press Institute and has helped guide the next generation of journalists as Professor of Journalism at Cardiff University.”
Deputy Director of the Centre for Journalism David English said, “We are delighted to have so many winners. It’s a great tribute to Cardiff’s alumni such as Alex and Ciaran who routinely deliver journalism of the highest standard and rigour.
“Particular praise and congratulations must go to Richard Tait on this entirely deserved and highly prestigious award. Congratulations to you all.”
