Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies’ distinguished list of Honorary Fellows and Professors was recently joined by Guardian News and Media’s Editor-in-Chief Alan Rusbridger.
Professor Rusbridger’s first Cardiff lecture since becoming an Honorary Distinguished Professor said his talk, 'Open Journalism', was about understanding the place of journalism in the ecology of information.
He went on to say the future was exciting for young journalists, who were being equipped with all the traditional and current skills needed to survive and prosper in the changing world of journalism.
Professor Rusbridger first joined the Guardian in 1979 before working as the Washington correspondent of the London Daily News before returning to the Guardian as a feature writer.
He then moved from writing to editing and was responsible for launching Guardian Weekend magazine and the paper's G2 section. He was made deputy editor in 1994, when he first started working on the paper's initial forays into digital publishing.
As editor, he helped launch Guardian Unlimited - now guardian.co.uk and, in 2004, was responsible for the paper's complete redesign and transformation into the European Berliner format.
He oversaw the integration of the paper and digital operations, helping to build a website which today reaches 31 million unique users across the globe, making it the fifth most popular newspaper site in the world.
Professor Richard Sambrook, the School’s Director of the Centre for Journalism said, “Alan Rusbridger has successfully overseen the complete restructuring of a daily printed newspaper into an international digital brand.
"His knowledge and vision for journalism’s future will help to inform and shape the ongoing debate here in Cardiff where we train our students to use the latest technologies to deliver quality journalism of the highest standard.
