It is indisputable that the modern mass media, and its increasing convergence with new media arising from new technologies, has become an important area of serious study in recent years.
With this in mind, our undergraduate programme responds to an ever-increasing demand for media courses which help students to understand and comment on the various roles performed by the media in their own, and other, societies.
Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies
Our degree in Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies is challenging and academic. Its emphasis is on taking an essential part of modern life, the media, and enabling you, in studying its many forms, to develop your ability to think coherently, discuss competing theories with confidence, and write cogently.
Taking an analytical approach, the modules we have here are varied and numerous - we offer courses in subject areas as diverse as War, Politics and Propaganda, Game Studies, Horror, Fantasy and the Media and Political Communication. Also, though the undergraduate programme is not a training or vocational degree, there are opportunities to take modules which involve online work and writing for media.
The staff we have here are first class and many are of international renown and reputation. Indeed, many of the books or journal articles you will read (or maybe already have read!) will have been written by our academics.
A Nationally Recognised Course
It is a source of pride to us that The Times Good University Guide 2010 places the School in its top three - out of eighty seven - Schools/departments for the study of Communication and Media Studies.
Cardiff is one of only three institutions in Communication and Media Studies to make the top five in all three league tables by the Times, Guardian and Independent newspapers.
